The Inside Track: Recruiter’s Advice for Nailing Your Virtual Interview

Video interviews such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams and even FaceTime have become the new normal for many companies during the interview process.

The impression you make on the interviewer can often outweigh your actual credentials. In interviews, your poise, attitude, communication skills, and social competence, along with your work experience, determine whether you get the job or move forward in the hiring process.

We’ve shared before about the ways candidates may sabotage their job search in this blog.  Here’s a blog written by an Experienced Recruiter on how candidates can prepare for a sucessful virtual interview.  Preparation is the key!  Here are the top five ways to nail that interview and get you one step closer to landing that job!

1️⃣ Test Run Your Tech

You don’t have to be the most technically savvy person, but being able to access your video meeting smoothly is crucial for a good first impression. Spend 5-10 minutes before your meeting to ensure your video and audio are working correctly on your laptop or desktop. Addressing minor technical issues in advance rather than during your interview can save time and prevent distractions.

We know technology can be unpredictable. If you encounter issues like bad Wi-Fi, simply log back into the video meeting or communicate with the interviewer via chat, phone, or email, and pick up where you left off. They will understand!

Preparing for a few minutes will help you feel more confident and ready. Remember, if you feel nervous, take a few deep breaths!

2️⃣ Check Your Surroundings

Your video background also impacts first impressions. Choose a background that is not distracting. Avoid busy artwork, hanging pictures, or a messy room. Consider what the interviewer will see from their point of view.

A calm, clean space refocuses the attention on you. If your space isn’t ideal, consider using a virtual background like a virtual office or a blurred backdrop.

Also, check for noise. If there’s loud construction, car horns, or other distractions, find a quiet space where you can have 30 minutes to an hour of uninterrupted time.

3️⃣ Do Your Research

You might be asked, “So what made you decide to apply to this role/company?” It’s common to research the role but overlook the company, culture and hiring manager. Spend a few minutes checking the company’s website and social media pages. Mention key information about the company during your interview, such as awards, recognitions, and technologies they use. Name-dropping someone you know in the company can also help. Relating to the company culture shows interviewers that you would be a good fit for their team.

Prepare a short list of questions. Showing interest throughout the conversation, rather than saving questions for the end, keeps the dialogue flowing and shows your engagement.

4️⃣ Be Yourself

There’s more to you than what’s on paper. The interview is not only for the interviewer to know you but also for you to understand your prospective employer. Be honest when discussing your experiences. If you’ve had a negative experience in the past, frame it positively, focusing on what you learned.

Honesty is the best policy. Avoid exaggerating your work experience or skills, as it could negatively impact your job performance and the company’s success if you are hired.

5️⃣ Follow Up & Say “thanks!”

The first and last five minutes of an interview are the most memorable. End the interview positively by thanking the interviewer for their time. Reflect on the interview and within 24 hours, follow up with an email or a handwritten note expressing your interest in the position. Little gestures can make a big difference and a thank you message after, will make you stand out!
